Different music videos in our genre

Taylor swift - White Horse
We have drawn inspiration from this music video because we feel Rachel Hawker is like Taylor Swift with the subjects of her songs, and because of this we feel that like Taylor Swift a narrative music video with some performance would be best. I have researched some of her music videos and all of the songs about love have a young teenage puppy love feel to them. Taylor Swift also writes songs about break ups, which is what Rachel Hawkers song 'Just A Taste' is about and so I watched Taylor's video of White Horse which is about a similar topic to the song we have chosen. It is like our music video because we are going to use flash backs like she does in this video to show when they were happy together.

Kelly Clarkson - Mr know it all
This song is like the one we have chosen because it has a slight pop edge to it. I watched the video and we thought it was was interesting and we wanted to use some of the ideas to try and convey a different meaning, so it relates to our song more. For example we like the idea of her watching a screen of something she has just done in the past and lip syncing over it. We also like the idea of having the band silhouetted behind the green screen, we have expanded on that by having the two female leads silhouetted in different positions behind the green screen.

Colbie Caillat - I Never Told You
This music video is similar to ours because it is a narrative video and the style of music is the same as ours to. In this video it has a picture then fades into the picture to show a scene this was one of our original ideas and watching this video we saw ways in which we could do this. This video also gave us the idea to have a romantic beach scene between the boy and the girl but we knew we would have to make it appeal more to a teeanager audience.

Genre Research

The genre of our song is Country/ Soft Rock/ Pop and as i researched into this genre i found a singer songwriter who is similar to ours and her songs are like the song we have chosen 'Just a Taste' this singer songwriter is Taylor Swift.
Although our target audience is slightly older than that of Taylor Swift's we feel that she is still a creditable inluence to use when creating our music video as the way she creates a narrative in her videos is effective in getting across the meaing of the song.
Most of Taylor Swifts music videos are narrative with bits of performance in them. Most of Taylor Swifts songs she writes herself so she draws inspiration from her own experiences so being a teenager a lot of her songs are about love and break ups, which is similar to Rachel Hawker. For example Taylor Swifts song love story is about how she loves a boy but she thinks he doesn't notice her and through the video as it tells its narrative we discover he does. This video uses intertexuality as it makes references toShakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with the costume and some of the lyrics. There is a Various range of shots in this music video because it is a narrative so it shows all the aspects of the story that is being told.
Taylow Swift has a target audience of tweens and teenagers i would say form about 10 - 17 years old mainly girls because they can relate to her songs and understand what she is going through.

Rachel Hawker and the Remedies

As a group we have decided to use one of Rachel Hawker and the Remedies songs to create our music video as our unsigned band.

The Band describe there music as pop/ rock/ Soul, but the song we have chosen is called 'Just a Taste' and as a group we feel it has more of a country/ soft rock/ pop vibe to it. It also reminded me of the singer songwriter Taylor Swift.

The band has four member, Rachel Hawker the singer songwriter, Kevin Rose - Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals, Lloyd Landeg - Bass Guitar, Chaz McLeod - Drums. The band have done busking tours and have video diaries of this on there youtube channel.
The Lyrics to Just A Taste.
She lights up another cigarette,
Hopes that the smoke will mask her regret,
Sometimes it's best to forget,
She burns through another chapter in her life,
Just longing for an answer and a light and,
Friday night and she's practising her lines,
No valid reason, just passing the time,
She knows what she's got to say,
But can't find her voice,
Sometimes it's so hard to see that there's a choice,
That there's a choice,

So lace me with poison and feed me your lines,
I'm craving your toxins so spare me sometime,
I know I'm a dick, I'm addicted to you,
So give me just a taste,
Just a taste to see me though,

Now she's back home, she walks through her old school,
Blood, glass and needles surround the empty pool,
I don't know what to do she says 'How'd it end up like this?'
'How'd I end up like this?','Dont wanna be me, don't wanna be you,
Just wanna break free, just wanna break through!'
Then she looks up and she looks in the mirror and says,
'What the f***'s going on ?' Just wanna go back to bed with you,
I don't know what it is but I'm crying out for more,
I'm longing for the answer but I'm running for the door,
I'm running, I'm running, I'm running,

So lace me with poison and feed me your lines,
I'm craving your toxins so spare me sometime,
I know I'm a dick, I'm addicted to you,
So give me just a taste,
Just a taste to see me though,

So lace me with poison and feed me your lines,
I'm craving your toxins so spare me sometime,
I know I'm a dick, I'm addicted to you,
So give me just a taste,
Just a taste to see me though,
Just a taste to see me through,
Just a taste, just a taste,

Just a taste, Just a taste, Just a taste,
To see me through

Johnny Cash Music Video - Hurt

Johnny Cash covered the song hurt, the genre of this music video is personal, as it was the last song he recorded and performed before he died. The audience of this music video would be his fans to remember him and what he did through his life. Other people may watch it because they may be fans of the original version and want to see how someone else has interpreted it.
The representation of this music video is mainly religious as at the beginning there is close ups of religious objects such as Jesus carrying a crucifix

During this music video a lot of close ups are used to show all the past experiences Johnny Cash has had and showing his life, which shows that this video is very personal and narrative as it is telling the story of his life.
Johnny Cash is the only person in this music video apart from a woman called June who he fell in love with and left his wife for.
There is also a medium shot of a Johnny Cash museum closed for public sign and then there is close up shots of broken, smashed records all over the floor which denote his career being over.

There are pictures of his children as well which he hardly ever saw, he is also sitting at the table as if it is the last supper which shows it is his last supper as it is his last song he was ever going to do. The piano closes which symbolises the end of his music career as well.

Goodwin's Rules

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g stage performance in rock video, dance routine in hip hop)

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
(the words are interpreted visually either through a narrative, or figuratively through signs and symbols)
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
(the editing of the visuals is closely linked to the rhythms of the music)

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
(a visual style)

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking(screens within screens, telescopes, mirrors etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body

6. There is often intertextual reference
(to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)

Music Video Genres

There are six main genres for music videos they are,Performance, Narrative, Promotional, Spectacle, Image and Personal.

A Performance based music video consists of the band or artist lip syncing to the song. The main shots that are used in a performance music video are close up shots, It is mainly focused on the singer and in instrumental sections it is focused on the band but the camera doesn't really move that much. Special are used to show the meaning of the song and the bands image.
An Example of a Performance video is - Coldplay Viva La Vida

A Narrative based music video tells the story of the song. In these music videos there is a bit of lip syncing from the artist. These music videos use medium and long shots to show the story, withing the frame of the shot it is not just the artist like in a performance based video, there is also hardly any editing because it is telling a story. For example- Taylor Swift - Back To December

A Promotional music video has clips of the film as well as the singer, there is a bit of lip syncing from the artist aswell. It is usually set close to where the film is set. The costumes may be similar to the artist aswell but still show the artists own style. An example of a Promotional music video is - Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

A Spectacle music video consists of no plot and no narrative, it also uses quick cuts and no conitinuity between the clips, split screens are also sometimes used. Most spectacle music videos don't make much sense as there is no story or relative meaning to the song. An example of a spectacle music video would be - Lady Gaga- Poker face.

A Image music video show the band or artists image by having different clothes to represent what the band or artist is like. Within image videos there are a lot of clean cuts between each clip/scene with a range of shots such as close ups, and long shots to show a band together which would give personality to the video. An Example of this would be - One Direction -  What makes you beautiful.

A Personal music video usually consists of the band or artist lip syncing the song and showing personal aspects of their life which relate to the song. They were their style of clothing and uses a various range of shots, a lot of close ups are used to focus in on something, which helps to make the song and video more personal. An example of this would be - Jonny Cash Hurt.

Analysis Of A Music Video

Track - What Makes you beautiful
Artist and director -  One Direction and John Urbano
Genre - Pop

You can tell this is a pop genre music video through the outfits that they are wearing as it is a young and trendy style. The music video itself is an Image video you can tell this because it is showing the boys to be young and playful which is the image the record label wants the boys to have. It is set on a beach in California we see this as soon as the music video starts because the first shot is an establishing shot of the beach, which then fades to a close up of one of the group members hand tapping to the beat inside a car which is driving along the road to the beach.

Also in this music video there are aspects of performance as the boys are standing in different places on the beach singing towards the camera for example here they are all together performing to the camera.

This video uses various types of shots, When one of them is singing to the camera a mid shot is used.

It also uses panning shots to pan across all of the group when they are performing some parts together. This video uses a lot of fade transitions to go from one shot to the next, which shows a period of time as past for example in this music video the boys are playing on the beach with the girls, it then fades and they are sitting around a campfire laughing a joking with them this shows time has pasted and also conveys the image of young lads just being normal teenagers.

A2 Music videos

This year in media we are looking at music videos, and will be making one ourselves for an unsigned band.
